Ride Schedule From 5/20/2013 Thru 7/19/2013

DRAFT 2013 EBC Ride Schedule

2013 EBC Ride Schedule

Unless a remote start is listed, summer Weekend and Holiday Rides leave from Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave, Wilmette. All day parking is free at spaces along the tracks on weekends and east of 9th on Greenleaf during the week, but check signs when you park.  Please do NOT park in the Panera Bread parking lot.  Summer Weekday Rides leave from the Chandler Center, 1028 Central St, Evanston.  Street parking is available on Lincoln St.

Please arrive by the scheduled time of the ride.  This allows time for everyone to sign-in, riders to be introduced, and the leader to be sure everyone is prepared for the ride.  Rides will not take place if there is snow or ice on the surface of the road, or if it's raining or snowing.

Please wear a helmet, have a bike in good mechanical condition, carry water and a spare inner tube, and be on time so the ride can start promptly.   You are expected to ride safely and courteously as outlined in EBC's guide to safe group riding and to follow the rules of the road.  Ride leaders reserve the right at their sole discretion to ask any rider who does not wear a helmet or who treats others disrespectfully to leave the club sponsored ride.  All EBC rides must have a sign-in sheet and all participating riders must sign in.  You may ride with EBC a few times before joining.

Pace: Relaxed <10 mph, Casual 10-12 mph, Moderate 13-15 mph, Fast 15-17 mph, Fast Plus (F+) 17-19 mph, Very Fast (VF) 20+ mph and Very Fast Plus (VF+) 22+ mph.  Two ride paces are indicated by "/" - for example "F/F+" means that there will be a Fast group and a Fast Plus group.  Usually the groups will meet at the Snack/Lunch break.  Pace is the nominal riding speed on the road.  The overall average speed will be slower due to stops. The pace may vary due to conditions.  On Fast, Fast Plus and Very Fast rides you may be left behind if you cannot maintain the pace.

A bicycle ride may be considered an official EBC ride where miles may be counted, if it meets all of the following criteria:

  1. It is an EBC scheduled ride open to and known by anyone who is capable of doing the ride and publicized with enough time for anyone who wants to go to do so. Rides may be scheduled in one of several ways:
    1. Included in the annual list of rides managed by the Rides Chair.
    2. Communicated to the Rides Chair via e-mail including start, distance, pace and other pertinent information with sufficient time to review and publish on the web schedule.
    3. Formed as part of a regularly scheduled Show & Go ride.
    4. Announced by an existing ride leader by noon of the day before the ride via the Google Groups EBC Ride List Serve.
  2. New rides may not conflict with already existing rides starting at the same day & time and going at the same pace, unless they are part of a scheduled Show & Go.
  3. There must be a sign-in & waiver sheet with the names and signatures of all riders listing the date, name of the ride leader, the sweep, location and distance of the ride.
  4. There must be at least two people on the ride, with the leader being a current club member.

The web ride schedule is updated whenever we are notified of changes or additions to club rides. To add a ride or change ride info, call or E-mail Jerri C. (773)281-5775  rides@evanstonbikeclub.org or Jeff M. (847)948-0672  ebcbike@evanstonbikeclub.org

The best way to get in shape for cycling is to ride hills, but hills are rather lacking in the Chicago area.  Over the years the club has put together a number of variations on a hill training ride utilizing a number of public access roads to Lake Michigan.  We will use one of these route variations.  Our pace will be moderate (13 – 15 mph) and we will re-gather at the top of each hill.

06/18 Tue 7:30PM    e Club Meeting: How to Be Your Own Soigneur

Soigneur, from the French soigner, meaning to take care of.  A soigneur on a pro cycling team “takes care of” his/her assigned cyclists by getting their feed sacks/sports drinks together, doing their laundry and – most important – providing massage therapy.  (Don’t sweat the French; Americans tend to call them “swanees.”)  Jen Agan will join us to share her experiences as a soigneur and provide guidance – and some demos – on massage techniques for cyclists.  You’ll learn how a foam roller can be your friend and what you should expect from a cyclist-centric hands on massage.

Jen Agan is a massage therapist  who works with Vision Quest athletes and has worked as a soigneur on the Tour of California, the Tour of Colorado and the Omega Quick Step Pharma team, among others.

Remote Start:  929 W Exchange St, Brodhead, Wisconsin

We will ride the quiet back roads of Southern Wisconsin to New Glarus, known for its Swiss heritage and home to the New Glarus Brewery where the popular Spotted Cow beer is made.  We will make rest stops in the small communities of Albany and Monticello along the way, as well as experience the historic and spooky 125 year old Stewart Tunnel on the Badger Trail.  New Glarus is in a valley, so expect some hilly terrain.  Option 2 (46 miles) is to ride the Sugar River Trail (a flat, crushed limestone trail) from Brodhead to New Glarus, meet up with the road group for lunch, then return the same way.  A $4 daily Wisconsin State Trail Pass is required to bike the trail.
