Fwd: New Bike Lanes Wide Open
Author Last Post
I have ridden the new PBL by NU a couple of times, and prefer it over riding on Sherman.  Be careful at the intersection of Chicago and Sheridan!  If you are riding north on the bike trail south of NU then you find the trail merges with the sidewalk on the east-west segment of Sheridan just south of the campus.  Since there is usually not much, or no, pedestrian traffic this works fine.  But when you come to the part of Sheridan which turns north, you will want to merge onto the PBL.  The sidewalk has ramps to the street BUT THEY DO NOT COVER THE WHOLE PART OF THE CURVE.  So you could easily expect to smoothly merge into the PBL and be surprised to find yourself going over a curb.  So approach slowly even if there are no pedestrians around until you know where the sidewalk ramps are located.
Good summary here if you are not on Go Evanston email list.

New Bike Lanes Wide Open

Go Evanston

November Newsletter
The new bike lanes are open on Sheridan Avenue in front of NU, and they are wonderful. Car lanes have been cut from four lanes to three for much of the stretch, and there is space for buses to safely load passengers. Head out and see for your self what a great job the City did reconfiguring this dangerous corridor.
Pedal Bright Volunteers needed
You know how scary it is when you (don't) see kids biking around at night without lights? The city is trying to fix that with their annual Pedal Bright giveaway. Free bike lights for all who want them. Pedal Bright this year is on Tuesday, November 7th, from 2:30 to 4:30. There will be two sites for free lights: the Weber Arch at Sheridan and Chicago, and the ETHS bike rack at Church and Wildkit drive. To volunteer email info@goevanston.org.
A Dangerous Intersection
On Tuesday morning October 24, there was another car crash at the corner of Ridge and Greenleaf.  This was the 20th accident at this corner this year, a sharp increase compared to past years. This number does not reflect the many near misses that occur daily nor the aggressive, distracted, or reckless behavior that we have all witnessed.
The Appropriate Double Standard
We read, in the *Evanston RoundTable* and elsewhere, that cyclists should obey the same rules as motorists. Well, yes. Cyclists should not ignore rules. But does it really make sense to apply standards uniformly?
Special Report: Bicyclist, pedestrian fatalities on the rise in the suburbs

The Daily Herald reports that records show fatal collisions between vehicles and people walking or biking in the suburbs spiked by nearly 13 percent from 2014 to 2015.
