Blue Heron rookery visible from North Branch Trail
Author Last Post
There is a large (30+) group of great blue heron nests in the trees visible from the North Branch Trail.  These large birds nest high up in the trees.

To see the rookery, head north on the North Branch Trail from Lake Avenue.  After you cross the bridge over the river, go about 40 yards and look for a clearing to the left.  Behind the clearing is a group of taller trees.  You will see what at first look like a bunch of squirrel nests, until you notice the blue herons flying to and from the nests.  You can see the nests from the trail and need not get closer.  Binoculars would help, I imagine, although I forgot and left mine at home today.

This is before the trail splits (left branch to Winnetka Rd, right branch to Happ Rd and then New Trier West). The rookery is also visible from the left branch of the trail, before you get to the large cell phone tower next to the trail.
