Thanks for posting this. I’ve had my bike in for service on this issue. They pull the crank arms off and inspect it by sight. The actual incidents of cracking, according HP Trek is worth looking for but extremely low. This inspection would now be part of your yearly service.

Do ask your vendor to do the inspection. Based on my experience in Evanston at bike shops, I wouldn’t assume it is inspected.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

The odds of having a problem are low, but of course not zero. When they inspected it, Velosmith thought the Ultegra crank on my bicycle - purchased in 2018 - might be a candidate for replacement. They sent it to Shimano for further evaluation earlier this month, and indeed it was. I’ve gotten the bicycle back now with new cranks and chainrings.

I hadn't given this recall notice much thought since my Shimano Ultegra crankset first passed inspection shortly after the notice was issued in Fall 2023. But when I took my bike to the shop last week, the mechanic re-inspected the crank as part of the shop's routine service and determined that it now definitely needs to be replaced. The old crank is on its way to Shimano; the new one should arrive next week; and the replacement part and installation cost will be free of charge. If your bike has one of the listed pre-2019 Ultegra or Dura-Ace cranks, you should continue to have it inspected periodically.
