Hazardous Tree Removal to Begin at Ladd Arboretum June 30th EVANSTON, IL - Beginning Monday, June 30, the City's Forestry Division, in partnership with Evanston-based Arborgreen Tree Services, will begin the removal of hazardous trees at the Ladd Arboretum. To ensure public safety and provide a secure work environment for crews, the Arboretum path will be closed daily during work hours from June 30 through approximately mid-July.
Paths on the east side of the Channel (in Twiggs and Butler Parks) will remain open and available to the community. Arboretum paths will close every morning and reopen in the evenings and on the weekends. Work will take place in the 2nd, 5th, and 7th wards. What are considered hazardous trees?Hazardous trees are defined as those that pose a significant risk of falling and potentially causing injury to individuals or damage to property. This classification can include trees exhibiting signs of structural weakness, such as decay, extensive leaning, or root instability. Additionally, trees located near populated areas, roads, or structures can become hazardous, particularly during extreme weather events like storms or high winds. Over the past several months, certified staff arborists assessed trees at the Arboretum to identify those requiring removal. These assessments are essential to identify and manage risks effectively, ensuring safety. Once the work in the Arboretum is complete, tree removal will begin in Harbert Payne Park around mid-July, followed by Twiggs and Butler Parks. The City will post signs informing the community of path and park closures. All existing reservations will be honored including reserved shelters, planned events, and reserved venues. For questions or information, please contact 847-448-4311. Community members may simply dial 311 while in Evanston.
