Village Reminds Residents E-Bikes Not Permitted In...
Author Last Post
The Patch article contained the contents of a recent announcement on Glenview's web site.

It would be interesting to find out why someone in the Village found it necessary to publish this reminder at this time:

Today I received a phone call from the Glenview Village President responding to my email to the Board of Trustees questioning whether there is a e-bike ban in the community. He stated that their Motor Scooter ordinance that seems to ban e-bikes by its language is old and was written before e-bikes became a thing. He said the village is working to revise it and likely will adopt Illinois' laws which treat Class 1 and 2 e-bikes as bicycles but require a motor vehicle license for Class 3. He stated that they were not enforcing any ban. EBC rides with e-bikes are welcome in Glenview.

I wonder if the local news article was written with the intent to stir up some controversy and try and light a fire under the village to change its ordinance?

If you buy an e-bike, make sure you know what class you are getting.

In the City of Chicago, this would be unenforceable, due to CPoliceD's severe short-staffing and demoralization (for both good and bad reasons).  Don't know about Glenview PD...

I really hate being passed by idiots on e-bikes, none of whom have ever announced themself before passing me, but I don’t see how a ban can work. I’d like to see e-bikes regulated the way motorcycles are regulated, but that’s probably a pipe dream.

NYC tried to keep e-bikes off the Hudson River greenway. They gave up 2 years ago.

This seems to be the section of the Glenview municipal code that applies. Note although it is titled Motor Driven Scooters the definition includes e-bikes. $100+ fine.

Curious. As a very long term Glenview resident [since 1978 for me; my wife’s family moved here in 1894]  I’ve never heard of this, and certainly e-bikes and e-scooters are common on the bike paths paralleling Lehigh and Chestnut.

When the Glenview cycling plan was updated recently, there was a tour led by the planning team on an electric scooter, with village staff riding with us.

I’m not aware of any signage in the Village indicating this.

Not on streets?!?! Not on paths!  I can understand not wanting those going 28 mph but if you stick to speed limits on paths -15 mph. That should be okay. On streets go as fast as you want.

Not very hospitable.

Thanks for the heads up. I checked the Glenview code and this may be true. I’ve sent an email to Glenview ask for clarification.
