2026 Best Bike Helmets Guide
I gave you a peek behind the scenes at how I put together my buyer's guides a couple of weeks ago, so I won’t go too deep into the weeds this time. But I just updated the 2026 Best Bike Helmets Guide, and I think it might be controversial.
I thought riders wanted highly vented helmets?
There’s a balance in these guides between what people want to see versus what I think should be there. Anecdotally, I’ve spent years hearing from riders who swear they prefer a highly vented helmet over an aero one. Conversely, I’ve spent years telling people that a modern aero helmet is just as suited to everyday riding as a highly vented one.
Despite that, in years past, I sided with what I thought was user sentiment. I looked for helmets that were highly vented but also aero-optimized. I felt like that compromise was the perfect way to get people free speed while holding onto the ventilation I thought riders wanted. As always, I watched the analytics to see what people were reading about. The results didn’t track with the anecdotes.
This is the year of the aero helmet
What people were actually interested in, based on the analytics, was the aero helmet. Yes! Finally! You can get as much of an aerodynamic advantage from a helmet as you can from deep carbon wheels. And I promise you, even with the rising popularity of Chinese wheel brands, a helmet is significantly cheaper. Not only that, but Specialized just updated the Evade 4 specifically for better cooling. The Evade 3 was already the fastest helmet on the market, and now it doesn’t drip sweat on your glasses. That is a massive win, and I was thrilled to crown it the best overall helmet.
That creates a problem for the buyer’s guide
A best helmet buyer's guide has to have a best aero helmet category, but if the best aero helmet is also the best overall helmet, what does that mean for the structure of the guide? If I were merely chasing clicks, the obvious solution would be to take one of the aero helmets I have from Giro, Sweet Protection, or Oakley as either the best overall or the best aero helmet, and just write some copy that explains it. That’s not the point, though. I strongly believe that the best helmet overall is the fastest helmet, as long as it stays cool. And I believe that the best aero helmet simply has to be the fastest option available. How do I handle this problem?
One solution will come in time. Later this year, I’ll be testing a variety of helmets with an aero sensor to see if any of them are actually faster than the Specialized. Unfortunately, they aren't all released yet, so stay patient.
In the meantime, I did know of one helmet that is definitely, without a doubt, faster than any other option on the market and is unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon: the POC Procen Air. The only problem is that I’m not sure readers expect a quasi-TT helmet to take the best aero spot. It is both highly usable and definitely the fastest, though.
Do you think my choices make sense or is there another way you would have handled this puzzle? Drop us a comment.
