SUMMER IS PERFECT FOR BIKING! Bike Wilmette is celebrating the long days of summer by working to make bicycling, walking and all forms of active transportation in Wilmette safer and more convenient. Next meeting: Our next meeting is August 15th at 6:00 p.m. We meet every third Tuesday each month. Contact info@bikewilmette.org to RSVP and for room number. CMAP Planning for 2050: Several of us attended the outstanding forum presented by CMAP about the future of transportation and climate change issues in the area. Help out by filling out their five surveys!Pop-Up Bike Lane: Go Green Wilmette was a recent recipient of a generous grant award from the Evanston Bicycle Club to create a pop-up protected demonstration bike lane. Go Green Wilmette has partnered with Bike Wilmette to begin planning for this demonstration project. Take a look at this pop-up demonstration video from Minneapolis. Summerfest Bikes: This year's event had at least 200 attendees arrive by bicycle, highlighting the need for more downtown bike racks. We distributed Bike Wilmette flyers to many of the parked bikes. We'll try next year to arrange for a bike corral.New Evanston Bike Lanes: If you haven't yet seen Evanston's new protected bike lanes, check them out!Downtown Road Markings: Last week, the Village repainted many of the road markings surrounding the Metra tracks, including the Green Bay Trail crosswalk at Central Ave. PlacesForBikes Conference: Bike Wilmette was among the attendees at the inaugural PlacesForBikes Conference that took place in June at the Monona Terrace in Madison, WI. The conference gathered hundreds of local leaders and advocates from across the US to collaborate and gain "the tools, ideas and strategies to achieve broader community goals through biking." What else are we working on now? - Upcoming Fall Park District bike ride
- Proposal to Village for Divvy stations at Linden Station, Metra, Gillson Park
- Restoring funding for a comprehensive active transportation plan for Wilmette
- More bike racks in the Village
- Website and Facebook improvements
