Dear Bike Advocates,

This is Jan Spencer in Eugene, Oregon. You and your club members may be interested in a zoom presentation I will be making Thursday, November 5 at 7 PM Pacific Time - Pushing Back Against Cars.

The car is one of the most consequential machines built in human history. There are almost as many cars and trucks in the US as there are people. Cars and their support products and services play a huge role in the nation's economy.

At the same time, cars, roads, freeways, on and off street parking take up a disproportionate amount of urban space. Cars also have an enormous environmental, social, climate and public health footprint.

The presentation will touch on the role economics has played in the US that has led to this car centric way of life and what might be done to reverse course.

A growing number of people, groups and cities all over the world are pushing back on cars to improve public health, social well being and quality of life.  These are great stories and the presentation will focus on positive examples of pushing back.

The presentation, with slides, will feature depaving, historic freeway fights, Market Street, Community Plazas and the Southwest Corridor. We will also have a look elsewhere in the world where car push back is much stronger than the US including Barcelona, Curitiba, Paris, Houten and the Vauban Neighborhood in Freiberg, Germany.

This presentation is the fourth in a seven part series. It will be recorded and find its way to you tube. See below for zoom information and further below for the remaining presentations and links to the first four presentations now on you tube.
